Repeat dolphins stranding puzzles authorities
Authorities say they are mystified by the stranding of a pod of striped dolphins in Dunsborough, in south-west Western Australia, twice in the space of 12 hours.
Three dolphins were first spotted in shallow waters at Dunn Bay last night, but were sent back into the ocean by volunteers and officers from the Department of Conservation and Land Management (CALM).
However, the dolphins and another two pod members were discovered at the same location about 6:00am AWST this morning.
CALM spokesman Neil Taylor says the local sea rescue team has returned to shore after taking the five dolphins to deep waters off Cape Naturaliste.
"It did appear like one animal was sick, but this morning we did have veterinary services there to check them over and although they did have the peripheral scratches, they were in reasonable health, so they were all shipped out," he said.
"Why they're in there we're at a bit of a loss to explain and so we believe by putting them back in their normal terrain away from the shallows, that should be enough to give them a kick start and away they go."
